Nick Hall, DG 2018-2019
Rotary Club of Temple Terrace
After spending his first 10 years growing up in the picturesque countryside of Suffolk, England, Nick emigrated with his parents to the United States. He received his graduate degree in Neuroscience from the University of Florida College of Medicine, before embarking in 1976 upon a research career delving into the chemical links between the mind and body. This included a two-year stint training dolphins for the US Office of Naval Research, followed by studies of mass-stranding behavior in whales for the National Geographic Society. He currently teaches at the University of South Florida and directs the Wellness Center at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel.
His Rotary journey began out of curiosity when he accepted an invitation from Jerry Iwerks to visit the Rotary Club of Temple Terrace. Despite the absence of any and all attributes typifying Rotarians, he was welcomed into the club where he proceeded to serve as secretary, treasurer and eventually, in 2006, club president. Nick has served on three occasions as Assistant District Governor and once as Chief Assistant Governor. At the end of his term as president, he became the club’s Rotarian of the Year and in 2015 received the Governor’s Leadership Award. Then, in 2016, he received the District’s Service Above Self-Award.
Nick has been married to Hazel since 1970, has two daughters (Rachele and Stephanie), plus six grandchildren all residing in the same Temple Terrace neighborhood. Hazel is an active Rotarian with multiple Paul Harris Fellow awards, and together they share status as Major Donors to the Rotary Foundation. His daughter, Stephanie, is the faculty Interact advisor at Tampa’s King High School. In addition to Rotary, Nick serves on the Aquatic Board for the Greater Tampa Bay Boy Scout Council through which he provides small boat handling and water safety instructions to scouts and their leaders. He is a member of the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians and his hobbies include most outdoor pursuits, especially camping, hiking, cycling, and sailing.
